Rosenthal: From devastation to victory – how Max Scherzer rebounded from injury to help the Nats bring home a title (The Athletic)


HOUSTON – Max Scherzer’s wife, Erica, could not recall the exact details. But sometime on Sunday, somewhere inside their home, she and Max had The Talk.

“He literally could not move. He couldn’t turn his head. He couldn’t dress himself, couldn’t do anything,” Erica said. “I was doing everything for him that day. He looked so defeated.”

Game 5 of the World Series was that night at Nationals Park. Max, dealing with painful spasms in his neck and upper right trapezius, would be unable to make his scheduled start. Erica had to think of something to say. So, she did, focusing on the Nationals’ Game 6 starter, Stephen Strasburg.

“Maybe your story is helping everyone else behind the scenes and Stras is going to go be the hero,” Erica said. “He’s conquered everything all year. It’s Stras’ story and your story is behind the scenes. You just need to rest, take care of yourself – and you’ll be in there Game 7.”
