The Baseball 100: No. 72, Robin Roberts (The Athletic)

Starting in December and ending on Opening Day, we at The Athletic will count down the 100 greatest baseball players by publishing an essay on a player every day for 100 days. In all, this project will contain roughly as many words as “Moby Dick.” Yes, we know it’s nutty. We hope you enjoy.

All of us, I suppose, would have an opinion on who belongs in the “Most Underrated Pitchers Ever” team photo, but it really depends on what you mean by “underrated.” If you are talking about terrific pitchers who are not in the Hall of Fame, for instance, you could put Dave Stieb in there, David Cone, Bret Saberhagen, Kevin Brown, Billy Pierce, Johan Santana, Rick Reuschel, Jerry Koosman and any number of others.

I think Robin Roberts, who would be in the center of my underrated team photograph, is a different kind of underrated.

He is in the Hall of Fame, has been since 1976. It’s hard to be underrated and be in the Hall of Fame.
