Mets’ Carlos Beltran mess puts Mike Piazza in awkward spot (New York Post)


An event designed to celebrate a Mets legend is now being overshadowed by Carlos Beltran’s uncertain future as manager.

As the Mets gather Thursday morning in Port St. Lucie, Fla. to rename a street outside their spring training ballpark after Mike Piazza, all attention will be on Beltran, who MLB implicated in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal that has led to two suspensions and three firings.

According to The Post’s Mike Puma, the Mets won’t announce the fate of Beltran on Wednesday and it’s unclear whether the organization will address Beltran’s shaky situation before or after the Piazza ceremony. Beltran currently is in Port St. Lucie as the team prepares for pitchers and catchers to report in February.

There has been pressure on the Mets to decide the fate of their recently hired skipper, after the league on Monday suspended Astros manager A.J. Hinch and GM Jeff Luhnow one season each. MLB determined the two did not do enough to stop the cheating operation that began in 2017 and lasted through part of 2018, and Houston subsequently fired both men.
