Jacob deGrom not running away from third straight Cy Young talk (New York Post)



The Mets’ soft-spoken ace can’t hide his hard desire to add to his trophy case.

Jacob deGrom, the winner of two straight National League Cy Young Awards, showed up at Citi Field on Saturday to participate in the Mets’ FanFest. Though he did his duty in answering reporters’ questions about the Mets’ manager shuffle that most recently landed on Luis Rojas, as well as the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal that created such turmoil, deGrom grew most excited when asked if adding a third straight Cy Young fueled him.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said. “I said after I won the first one, that was always a goal. But to actually come true is kind of crazy to think about. And then to win another one, back to back, it’s hard for me to actually wrap my head around.

“Growing up, the dream was to play major league baseball, and then to win two Cy Youngs, who would’ve thought? The dream was to actually play the infield, not to be a pitcher. To win back to back, the list of guys that my name is mentioned now is truly an honor. You always set personal goals for going into a season, so I guess the third one’s a goal.”
