One bang on the trash can for a curveball, two for a changeup, 11 for … shame?
A fan arrived at the Astros’ spring training complex Monday to deliver a reminder of their past, just in time for a batting practice session for Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa.
The fan could be heard banging the trash can behind home plate — according to the Houston Chronicle and a fan’s video of the scene — mimicking the setup the Astros had in 2017 to illegally steal signs, with the number of bangs translating to what pitch was coming.
The scandal has rocked the baseball world and prompted notable players from other teams to rip the Astros for cheating the game. Commissioner Rob Manfred said Sunday that part of the Astros’ punishment was the public shame they have been getting in the aftermath, both from having to answer questions from reporters and hearing their competitors call into doubt their achievements.
