Gammons: Even Hank Greenberg said he stole signs; plus a Red Sox-Twins preseason comparison (The Athletic)


Spring arrivals usually are quiet. Jerry Remy, the retired second baseman and broadcaster, used to predict the first week’s stories when the Red Sox trained in Winter Haven, Fla., and I do remember spending hours on a Tampa street corner in 2004 awaiting the arrival of Alex Rodriguez because the Yankees wouldn’t allow the media into the minor league complex or the main stadium until the official reporting dates.

But this spring is different. Very different. On the first morning in Red Sox camp, minor league free agent catcher Juan Centeno was surrounded by media asking questions about the 2017 Astros sign stealing because he played in 22 games for that team, and Red Sox players from their 2018 championship team were all asked in some form what they knew (nyet). Dodger players who lost to that Astros team talked outrage, Trevor Bauer simply raged, some Astros current and former apologized, and Tony Kemp, now with the Athletics, admitted he knew about their system but…
