Braves sideline reporter Kelsey Wingert’s unexpected departure from Fox Sports South fueled outrage Wednesday on Twitter, following a report from The Athletic as spring training commences.
The decision on Wingert’s professional future was said to have been made late last year, with members of the Braves organization notified of the decision around that time. Wingert, a staple of the Braves broadcast, was allegedly not informed until later.
The Braves didn’t allude to a broadcast shakeup last month. According to the report, the team is in charge of the booth, which is manned by Chip Caray and Jeff Francoeur, but Fox regional networks make the final call on sideline reporters.
While some fans signed a petition in support of Wingert being reinstated, others denounced the decision on social media.
“If reports are true, I cannot believe the @Braves are parting ways with Kelsey Wingert. If true, that is the single worst broadcasting decision surrounding this team that I can possible recall. Truly inexplicable,” Braves Wire editor KC Covington tweeted.
