Doctors have recommended Tommy John surgery for Yankees righty Luis Severino, GM Brian Cashman told reporters including Erik Boland of Newsday (via Twitter). It’s obviously a major blow to the New York organization.
This is the second hit to a rotation that was enhanced over the winter through the addition of Gerrit Cole. The club is also facing uncertainty regarding southpaw James Paxton, though there’s hope he’ll be available for much of the season.
If indeed he goes under the knife, Severino is sure to be sidelined for the entire 2020 campaign. The typical recovery time for TJS — a procedure to replace the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow — is a year or more.
