Rosenthal: The Rays’ window could arrive earlier than expected (The Athletic)

One American League general manager predicts the Rays will win a World Series within the next five years. The way the AL is shaping up, that opportunity might come sooner rather than later. Maybe even this season.

The Astros — the most talented team in the sport, at least according to FanGraphs’ projected Wins Above Replacement (WAR) — must deal with the fallout from the sign-stealing scandal and the departure of free-agent right-hander Gerrit Cole.

The Red Sox traded former AL MVP Mookie Betts and left-hander David Price for an outfielder not nearly as accomplished as Betts, Alex Verdugo, and a top 100 prospect who is unlikely to make a significant impact in 2020, infielder Jeter Downs.

And then there are the Yankees, who already knew they would open without lefty James Paxton (back surgery) and righty Domingo Germán (domestic-violence suspension) before learning Tuesday that righty Luis Severino requires season-ending Tommy John surgery.
