Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin Recalled, Josh Sborz Optioned (Dodgers Nation)

The Dodgers made things official ahead of Friday night’s game against the Diamondbacks. Los Angeles called Tony Gonsolin up to make the start in place of Alex Wood, who hit the injured list. 

For Gonsolin, his start comes just over a year after he made his Major League debut. Tony got his first start in June of 2019 at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks. He produced a lot of soft contact in that start but also had some bad luck on a few plays. It also wasn’t helped by the fact that Joc Pederson was playing first base in that game. 

For Josh Sborz, he was basically recalled as backup for the Houston series. The Dodgers will play nine straight games from July 28th to August 5th. Having Sborz in the bullpen allowed for depth, though with Gonsolin returning his services are no longer needed. He warmed up in the bullpen at one point in the series but did not make an appearance. 

Gonsolin getting the start on Friday also allows for flexibility with Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw went on the injured list on Opening Day with soreness in his back after a workout. Dave Roberts hinted at the possibility of him returning Sunday, though that would push Walker…
