After the Dodgers blowout over the Diamondbacks on Saturday, fans had some questions. Mainly, why Kiké Hernandez was continuing to get regular at-bats when Rios, Beaty, and Pollock were crushing the ball.
And that’s a reasonable frustration given that Hernandez has just 4 hits in 24 at-bats since Opening Day. Hernandez obviously bought himself some time in the lineup with a massive five-rbi Opening Day performance. But the Dodgers have other guys on the bench rearing to go, and boy have they gotten loose as of late.
Edwin Rios, Matt Beaty, and AJ Pollock all went deep in the win last night. They also happen to be three guys that are not really utilized as true starters, though Hernandez is. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talked about the need to get all of these guys more at-bats in his post-game interview.
We’ve got to make sure we get Eddie and Matt at-bats and start games. So when they can come out there and still get big hits, it’s going to help them throughout the season and also get guys like Cody off their feet once in a while. It just speaks to the depth we have … we have a lot of good players.
