Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg on IL with shoulder inflammation (New York Post)

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg landed on the injured list Sunday with right shoulder inflammation, after insisting that he was healthy after getting tagged for eight runs in his most recent outing.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Sunday that an MRI revealed Strasburg has “some inflammation” and that the organization wants “to be smart,” without divulging a timetable for a return.

“This is all about Stephen right now and taking care of Stephen to make sure that when he does come back, he’s ready to go,” Martinez said.

Strasburg also was angered after Tuesday’s 14-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals that he was shown on the television broadcast during the third inning of the game rubbing the area between his neck and shoulder while seated inside the tunnel between the dugout and the clubhouse.

“I think it’s a joke, to be honest, that they shoot in the tunnel,” Strasburg said after the game, in which his fastball velocity dipped to 91 mph. “There’s got to be some sort of safe place in the stadium.
